Artist Statement

As a child with an active imagination, I was afraid of the dark. I kept a light on in my bedroom all through the night so the monsters lurking in the dark shadows had no where to hide. Today, venturing out after sundown can still feel a bit challenging. I feel a greater vulnerability and wariness. It means a heightened sensitivity to my surroundings, that can serve me well as a photographer.

Gary Winogrand once said he makes photographs "to see what things look like photographed." This rings true for me as well, especially when making pictures at night. To my eye, the camera does magical things with the images it takes in at night. I find that there is much beauty to behold in the interplay between light and dark, color and black, things revealed and things hidden. These photographs are my attempt at sharing that vision.
