Joseph Sterling

The Age of Adolescence was produced as my Master’s Degree project while a student at the Institute of Design in Chicago. It covered a period from 1959 through 1962, with a few images added until 1964. Harry Callahan and Fredrick Sommer provided the students with a very rich environment, and my adviser, Aaron Siskind, also provided great stimulation and inspiration. Their extraordinary ability to provide each student with just the right amount of their own involvement, allowed us to develop our own insights and resulted in an extraordinary group of artist photographers and teachers. The photographic world is forever indebted to them.
